The Art of Translation: Turning Ancestral Insight into Scientific Practice

An examination of the pathway from ancestral insight to scientific formulation by Lerato Mokonyane, Head of Chirandu Botanica

The Flavour Intelligence Framework showed that flavour is shaped not only by chemistry but also by memory, practice and cultural intention. At Chirandu Botanica, we take this understanding into the realm of application. Our work begins at the point where knowledge must move from insight into practice without losing the meaning that shaped it.

Before any formulation begins, we return to essential questions. Where does this ingredient come from? How has it been used? What do communities know that has never been written down? And critically, what part of that knowledge is vulnerable if we do not document and attribute it with precision?

Across Africa, plant knowledge is detailed, disciplined and carried through lived experience. Communities understand which ingredients soothe, cleanse, protect or restore, and they know how preparation methods influence outcome. Yet much of this knowledge has not entered scientific systems and meaning is often missing from the literature. Furthermore, safety data is quite often uneven and chemical profiles lack context. As a result, the insights that guide real use remain unrecorded.

Chirandu Botanica exists to bridge this gap in a responsible and structured way. While The Chirandu Institute builds the research foundations that verify and contextualise knowledge and Chirandu AI preserves provenance and provides the digital architecture that protects origin and supports analysis, our work begins once those systems are in place. We take verified insight and guide it through formulation in a manner that respects both evidence and cultural intention.

Our process is steady and deliberate;

  1. We begin with real use: names, preparation methods and cultural significance.
  2. We follow with scientific interrogation: chemistry, safety, extraction behaviour and stability.
  3. Once these layers are understood, we shape formulations that hold accuracy and origin together.

This is the art of translation at Chirandu Botanica. It is not the repackaging of heritage, but the careful movement of knowledge into scientific structure without losing what makes it true.

As a result, every formulation carries with it, a memory of where it comes from and it is our responsibility to ensure that memory remains intact as it becomes science, practice and future possibility.
